The Mountain Room: a mountain-painted climbing wall, a knotted rope and a foam pit

The brief

Big adventures. Room to breathe.

The idea was to create a complete playroom with plenty of opportunities to move, imagine, create, and unwind. We wanted to bring together all the fun of an indoor playground with the quieter corners that make a room somewhere a child can happily spend hours.

We divided the space into distinct play zones, with a mountain-inspired movement area on one side, a creative nook for art and making, and an elevated platform for reading, imagination, and a little retreat.

One of our biggest priorities was keeping the center of the room open. Even with climbing walls, monkey bars, a foam pit, and an art station, we didn't want the space to feel crowded. The open floor gives the room room to breathe, and leaves plenty of flexibility for whatever the day brings.

A dreamy palette of blues and purples ties everything together, with a hand-painted mountain mural adding a little adventure to the movement zone.

Design decisions

Why it's built this way.

Different ways to play, without filling every inch.

  • Move

A mountain to climb. A place to crash.

The mountain-inspired climbing wall anchors the movement zone, with monkey bars and a climbing rope adding different ways to climb, hang, and challenge the body. A foam-filled crash pit brings the action together in one dedicated area, leaving the rest of the room free for other kinds of play.

  • Create

An art studio that rolls away.

One of our favorite details is the custom mobile art desk. It tucks neatly into the creative nook when not in use, then rolls into the open center of the room whenever it's time for a bigger project or some shared creativity. Pegboard storage keeps supplies within reach, while a magnetic dry-erase wall offers another place to draw, experiment, and make.

  • Imagine & retreat

A little lookout above it all.

The elevated platform creates a cozy spot to climb up, read, imagine, or simply watch the room from above. It's a quieter destination away from the movement zone, giving the child another way to enjoy the space when it's time to slow down.
